3 Reasons Private Schools Can Be A Good Option For Children With Special Needs

Posted on: 16 September 2018

One of the most important things you can do for your child who has a developmental or learning disability is ensuring they are enrolled in an educational program that will be best suited for them. A lot of parents assume that private schools are not cut out for children who do have disabilities, but that is actually not the case. Public schools can have more programs available for children who do need special education, but there are some pretty important reasons why a private school can be just as good of a choice. Take a look at a few of those reasons you need to know before choosing a private or public school for your child.

1. Private schools often have smaller class sizes.

Even if a private school does not have as much for children with disabilities as far as available programs go, they do have something that can be extremely beneficial: smaller class sizes. A smaller number of students in the class can help your child fit in and feel comfortable easier, but it also allows room for a one-on-one tutor if you choose to hire one to help your child during their classes. Even if you do not go for a one-on-one tutor, the smaller class sizes allow for more hands-on education from the primary teacher.

2. Private schools sometimes work with public schools for special education programs.

If you have your sights set on a private school system, but you are bummed to find out they do not offer many special education programs, it doesn't necessarily mean a private school is out of the question. It is not uncommon for local private schools to work with public education institutions in the area where special education programs are concerned. You may find that the school hosts co-op programs involving students from both school systems, for example.

3. Private school cost can be partially funded by public education.

If you choose to place your child in private school, some of the funding may be covered by the public school system in your area. In some cases when a local school system does not have as much to offer your child as a private institution, the public school system will recommend placement out of their district and pay for full tuition to ensure your child gets what they need. The primary goal is to ensure every child with disabilities has access to the most suitable education plan.
